Is AI Safe? 10 Rules to Protect Your Privacy When Using AI Tools

AI assistants are becoming part of daily life. But every time you type something into an AI tool, you are sharing information with a service. These ten rules help you use AI confidently and safely.

1. Never share passwords or OTPs

No AI tool needs your passwords, OTPs, PINs or card numbers. Anyone asking for them through an “AI” is likely a scam.

2. Keep ID numbers private

Don’t paste Aadhaar, PAN, passport or bank account numbers into public AI tools.

3. Remove customer details

Before analysing customer data, remove names, phone numbers, addresses and emails. Replace them with codes like “Customer 1”.

4. Check the data settings

Many tools let you control whether your conversations are stored or used for training. Find these settings and choose what suits you.

5. Use business plans for business data

For company information, use tools and plans approved by your organisation, with clear data-protection terms.

6. Verify important answers

Safety is also about accuracy. Check medical, legal, financial and tax information with qualified professionals or official sources.

7. Watch out for fake AI apps

Download apps only from official websites and app stores. Be careful with browser extensions that ask for broad permissions.

Treat links, code and files produced by AI like anything else from the internet — check before you open or run them.

9. Respect other people’s rights

Don’t use AI to create fake reviews, impersonate real people or copy others’ work.

10. Teach your team and family

Share these rules with colleagues, staff and children. Safe AI use is a team habit.

Frequently asked questions

Do AI tools store what I type?

Many tools store conversations, and some may use them to improve their models unless you change a setting or use a business plan. Read the privacy policy and data settings of every tool you use.

Is it safe to use AI for business data?

It can be, if you use a tool and plan with suitable data protection terms, remove unnecessary personal details, and follow your obligations under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act. When in doubt, ask a legal professional.
